How to Hand Quilt a King Size Quilt

Quilting is both challenging and fun and there are many things you need to consider when you begin a quilting project.

One of the first things you need to decide when starting a project is definitely the size of your quilt. If you plan to work on a quilt for your bed as a king size, bed needs a quilt that is bigger than a regular sized bed.

Hand QuiltYou also need to give a thought on the length of the drop (overhang). Even if it’s a matter of taste in the end, we do find three main types when it comes to the overhang: the full-length quilt (a quilt that drops to ½” of floor), the blanket size quilt (your quilt drops to 1” below box spring) and the coverlet size quilt (the overhang goes up to 3” below mattress).

If you plan to work on a quilt for your king size bed, the quilt should fall somewhere in between Coverlet and blanket size. You may use a bed skirt to cover the box spring if you use a quilt close to Coverlet size.

The style of your bed is also essential on a quilting project. Many beds nowadays don’t have Footboards and you do need a drop on the sides and the foot for the beds. In case your king size bed has a footboard, you only have to have in mind a drop on the sides.

Don’t forget about your pillows when you design the size of your quilt. Some like to cover the pillows with the quilt and you need to give an allowance for a “pillow tuck” of 10” to 18”. You also need to have in mind how big/thick your pillows are. You may always go with pillow shams in which case you don’t need a “pillow tuck” allowance.

When you are getting into a big project like this, you definitely need to use a quilt frame. Some use frames that are 110” to 116” wide. You may work on a quilt 120” long, but you can’t have it wider than your frame is.

In case that no information helped you make a very clear idea, you may find online interactive tables that give you the right size of your quilt.

You may also go for a versatile quilt that you can use both lengthwise and width-wise. If your quilt is symmetrical, you may definitely use it in either orientation.

When your quilt isn’t symmetrical, you need to keep in mind that the length is going to be larger than the width for your king size bed.

Even though you may feel tempted to use some applique quilts especially designed for a queen size bed, stay focused and don’t use them. They don’t look that great on your king size bed.

Let’s do it!

It may seem a bit overwhelming and almost impossible at times, but it’s only a matter of how you see the solution when working on such a big project as a quilt for your king size bed.

You need to plan thoroughly and to decide on a specific pattern so that the project brings joy, not only more experience. Don’t forget the big rewarding you’re gonna have in the end, as it is gonna be quite big.

Primitive QuiltsThere are more methods to approach this type pf project and one popular way is to use large, powerful prints.  You may use various machine applique or fuse some circular patterns for the center, which fit the entire theme of your quilt. You may continue by adding rounds of big, amazing borders that show off two large-scale prints that coordinate. A great thing about this method is that you don’t have to worry about pieced blocks or matching any points whatsoever.

If you think this is too much for you, try the big blocks method. You may find blocks as big as 18” that not only look nice, but also help you finish your quilt way faster and easier. You may combine the large-scale prints with so many dots. You may need around 30 blocks for your quilt. Additionally, you may use the same blocks for other quilting projects for the room or around the house.

You can end up with a pretty nice quilt for your king size bed by simply repeating the blocks on the quilt. It’s important that you settle four patch blocks and squares on point, so you work fast and easy. It’s better to repeat blocks that are easy to chain piece, so you may also have some fun with the colors and pattern.

The basic method on any quilt, no matter its size, is using the strips. You can do this on your big quilt also and as long as you have the patience and creativity for it, you’re good to go!

Let’s not forget about the scrappy style for your quilt. You may find many books that include various patterns for scrapping, in multiple sizes, not only the big size. If you pay attention to the details, you may even master the “brown-bad” method.
